The packaging might be pretty, but it wont do a thing to alleviate troubled acne, reduce fine lines, smooth wrinkles, or replenish moisture and oils to dazzle your complexion. When it comes to cosmetics as with most other things, its whats inside that counts.

If you feel overwhelmed by the scores of product choices available today, and the miracles each repute to do, becoming more familiar with terms used in cosmetology and their true meanings might be helpful in distinguishing which products are and are not right for you.

Cosmetic companies are required to accurately divulge all the contents in their products, listing them in the order of concentration, from the most to the least. Certain cosmetic terms, however, can be confusing and misleading to the average consumer; terms such as all natural and fragrance-free, for instance.

While all natural does mean that ingredients used were derived from natural sources like plants and other organic material, use of the term applied to cosmetics is not regulated by the FDA. Some cosmetic companies not concerned with accuracy or with reputation often mislead consumers by applying the term to their product.

It is noteworthy that according to author and cosmetic expert Paula Begoun, in her book Dont Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me, there is no scientific evidence that natural ingredients are any more beneficial for skin than synthetic.

Products that advertise they are fragrance-free may still use fragrant plant extracts to mask offensive odor resulting from unrefined materials used. These extracts can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Fragrance-free, then, can mean only that the product is devoid of any noticeable aroma. Irritant-free is a more reliable term to look for in a product.

Alcohol-free products may be free of grain alcohol, which is drying. However, other forms of alcohol such as lanolin alcohol or cetearyl alcohol may still be used. For persons with sensitive skin, Ms. Begoun suggests using products that list any alcohol component just before or just after the list of preservatives.

The wise cosmetic consumer will select products based upon ingredient content and performance, not upon packaging or brand. Higher-end cosmetics will not necessarily work better than those that cost less, and one brands product may be excellent, while another product by the same brand ineffective. Therefore, brand loyalty will not necessarily benefit the consumer.

Many department-store cosmetic companies have been merged together. In all probability, cosmetic purchases bearing three different brand names might in actuality all be distributed by the same cosmetic company. In fact, over 75% of department store cosmetic lines are presently owned either by Estee Lauder or LOreal.

The short and sweet of it is to forget the hype. Everyones skin is different. Find out what works for you, and stick with it. Following a daily skin-care regimen tailored for your skin type, using tried and true products, will give your face a healthy glow like none other.br

Whats the difference between a serious skin care product and something else? Who says any skin care product isnt serious? Whether dealing with acne, aging, wrinkles, scars or anything else, skin care is always serious to the person dealing with any particular issue.

These days, thousands of skin care products line grocery store and drug store shelves, their fancy colors and packaging beckoning to the vanity found in all of us. Fresher skin, softer hair, smoother skin, no more wrinkles, whatever the case may be, theres a product out there designed and created just for you!

Many different types of skin issues afflict billions of the worlds inhabitants, and whos to say whats serious or not. A mild or severe case of acne is still acne, and the same goes for freckles, lines, crows feet, laugh lines and frown lines. What one person may consider a mild skin condition might be devastating for another. So, when it all comes down to basics, all skin care products are serious.

That being said, not all of those products that line those shelves are worth their packaging, or their price tag. Keep one thing first and foremost in your thoughts if youre looking for anti-wrinkle or anti-aging skin care products, or those meant to replenish, re-moisturize or re-hydrate the skin. They all must contain some form of Retin or Vitamin A to be worth anything. Even then, it will take months of constant use before you may see a difference, so patience is the key if youre trying to reverse the natural effects of aging. Also keep in mind that nothing will make wrinkles or lines disappear, but certain skin products will plump up skin cells to lessen the appearance of those lines and wrinkles.

For those who suffer from mild to severe cases of acne, products that contain alpha-hydroxy components will work best. Try to stay away from products that contain alcohol, as those may cause even further drying to the skin. There are other whitening creams and ointments out there that will reduce the appearance of freckles and scars, but again, long term use is recommended for best results.

Whether you decide to go for nationally know cosmetic brands or you want to try generic, or even natural, organic products, always read the label to determine ingredients. Make sure that you are not allergic to any of those listed, and then, to be on the safe side, perform a skin test with your new product before you apply it to large areas of your skin, not matter whether its made for face or body care.

Yes, skin care is serious business, but search for products with a little healthy skepticism. Dont believe everything you read, whether its in your favorite glamour magazine or not. Learn to identify major ingredients and how they work on your skin. You dont have to be a chemist to learn a few terms and basic compounds, but you do need to use common sense when choosing particular products, especially those that you use on your skin.br

Skin Care Horror Stories

There are researchers that have elaborated on the diseases caused by the chemical components of cosmetics and skin care products. Baillie- Hamilton an environmental health specialist at Sterling University in Scotland details how the toxins can cause problems as serious as immune system diseases, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, hypersensitivity, cancer, obesity, child health problems and musculoskeletal disorders etc.

Pesticides are specifically identified as a cause of immune suppression across the world. Neurotoxins also contained in these products are a root cause of increased incidence of brain disease. Make up and body care products can even cause birth defect allergic reactions and cancer. It is owing to the fact that our body absorbs a significant amount of what we put on our skin. However what is dangerous is that there is no government regulation on this $35 million industry which regularly launches products that are potentially risky to the human body.

Following are some of the products that are known to have repercussions which can be fatal.

Skin Lightening Products- These products cropped up in the market owing to the popular belief that lighter and paler skin tones signify beauty. Melanin produced by melanocytes is scattered within the basal layer of the skin. This factor determines how dark a person’s skin is, if the amount of melanin produced is more then it means that person will be of darker skin tone. It has another important function for the skin that is to protect it from the harmful ultra violet rays of the sun.

Working of the skin lightening product-
Its contents- mercury or hydroquinone – it works to reduce the production of melanin in the body thereby making the person appear fare.

The long term harm that these products cause is what is important to us. The melanin that is now produced in limiting quantities makes the skin vulnerable to skin cancer as the natural protection against UV rays is gone.

The next case that we will consider is of the side effects of acne cure products.

Acne is a very old problem and combating it has resulted in a struggle between the face and the products claiming to cure it available in the market. Acne is caused due to over production of oil in the glands of the body and the trapped bacteria are root causes of acne.

If we want to believe it or not most acne cure products have a lot of side effects. There is definitely a temporary cure of acne but the troubles that start after it range from diseases of liver, eyes and intestines. The chief cause is the drug accutane that although highly effective but can cause adverse effects on remission. So this problem although pertinent in adolescents should be handled with care. There are natural substitutes for these off the shelf solutions which could cause lasting damage.

According to a Cancer coalition press release in June 2000, typical cosmetics and individual sanitation products pose the maximum danger to cancer. As opposed to the company’s claims of all natural ingredients a closer examination puts forward an altogether different scheme.

This is very harmful as discussed above as the body absorbs a significant amount of what is applied on the skin so when artificial ingredients are ingested, the body has to spend immense amount of essential energies in fighting off them to eradicate them from the body. It is the liver that takes the maximum brunt of disposing these toxins from the body. The liver is a very important part of the body and if it is damages then the body becomes weak and diseases of all kinds plague it. So it is best to be very attentive when you choose skin care products and it’s always beneficial to find a natural solution as opposed to a cosmetic one.
